Foundations in Accountancy (FIA)

ACCA Foundation Entry Requirements & Exemptions

Find out who can start Foundations in Accountancy, how previous qualifications or practical experience may affect the exams you need to take, and what to check before progressing to the ACCA Qualification.

Who can start

Entry Requirements for ACCA Foundations in Accountancy

FIA provides an entry route into accountancy for students from different educational and professional backgrounds. ACCA does not set minimum academic entry requirements for FIA, so you do not need to meet the standard academic entry requirements for the ACCA Qualification to begin this route.

No Minimum Academic Requirements

FIA is open to students without formal academic qualifications, as well as those who want to build on existing knowledge. Your starting point should reflect your current knowledge and the qualification you intend to complete.

Suitable for Beginners and Career Changers

FIA can suit school leavers, career changers, and people working in finance or accounting who want to develop their knowledge through a recognised qualification route.

Choose the Right Starting Level

You do not have to complete every lower-level FIA exam before moving to a higher level. However, ACCA recommends starting with FA1 and MA1 if you have no previous accounting knowledge, as these papers establish the basics for further study.

Your Previous Qualifications

Exemptions into Foundations

If you already hold a relevant qualification, you may be able to skip individual FIA exams.

ACCA Foundation Exemptions

If you already hold relevant qualifications, you may be eligible for exemptions from some FIA exams. The papers you can skip depend on your previous studies and ACCA's exemption rules.

Check Which Exams You Can Skip

Use the official ACCA Exemptions Calculator to check how your qualifications may map to FIA papers or other ACCA exams. Confirm your eligibility with ACCA before deciding which courses or exams you need.

Exemptions and Fees

Exemption eligibility and fees depend on the exam and your circumstances. Check ACCA's current fees and exemption guidance before applying, as charges and rules may change.

Before You Register

Make sure you check the qualifications you are applying for, the exams you may be exempt from, and the entry requirements for any later transfer to the ACCA Qualification. An exemption from an individual FIA paper does not, by itself, confirm that you meet every requirement to transfer to ACCA.

CAT route

Practical Experience Exemptions for CAT Students

Students following the Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) route may be able to claim exemptions from some introductory and intermediate FIA exams based on relevant practical experience.

Four Papers May Be Covered by Experience

Eligible CAT applicants may claim experience-based exemptions for: FA1 – Recording Financial Transactions, MA1 – Management Information, FA2 – Maintaining Financial Records, MA2 – Managing Costs and Finance. These exemptions are subject to ACCA's CAT and practical experience requirements.

Experience Does Not Replace Every FIA Exam

The experience-based exemption route applies to the four papers listed above. It does not provide practical-experience exemptions from FBT, FMA or FFA.

Record Your Experience Correctly

ACCA explains how eligible experience should be recorded through the Foundations Practical Experience Requirement (FPER) route. If your experience was gained with an ACCA-approved employer, check whether you need to provide the relevant employer confirmation form.

Moving On to ACCA

How FIA Exemptions Can Help You Progress

FIA can provide a route towards the full ACCA Qualification, but the exams you have completed, your academic background, and your country of residence may affect the transfer process.

FIA examEquivalent Applied Knowledge exam
FBT — Business and TechnologyBT — Business and Technology
FMA — Management AccountingMA — Management Accounting
FFA — Financial AccountingFA — Financial Accounting

Eligible students who complete the Diploma in Accounting and Business may progress to ACCA with exemptions from the Applied Knowledge exams, subject to ACCA's rules. Some FIA students may also be eligible to transfer based on their existing academic qualifications or completed FIA papers. Read our guide to Progression from the Foundation Diploma to ACCA for information about transfer options and the steps involved.

Entry and Transfer Rules for Pakistan, Bangladesh and Kenya

ACCA applies specific conditions to students residing in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Kenya who want to transfer from FIA to the ACCA Qualification. Depending on your circumstances, you may need to meet the minimum entry requirements based on the country where your academic qualifications were awarded or complete the required seven FIA exams.

The conditions can differ by route and residency. Check ACCA's current transfer guidance before relying on an exemption or planning your progression. Students in Bangladesh may also need to meet additional Foundation Diploma registration requirements.

How the 2027 ACCA Qualification Changes May Affect You

ACCA is introducing a redesigned qualification from 2027. Students already studying FIA should check how their completed exams and remaining studies will map to the new structure.

ACCA's transition arrangements provide credit for equivalent elements completed under the current qualification. The impact on your individual route depends on your progress and the transition rules that apply to you.

Review the latest ACCA qualification changes and use ACCA's official transition guidance before making decisions about your remaining exams.
