CMA (USA) · IMA

CMA USA exam structure & syllabus.

Two parts, twelve subjects — what each one covers, how it's weighted, and how the exam itself is built.

Overview

A two-part exam

The CMA (Certified Management Accountant) exam, set by the [IMA](https://www.imanet.org/), has just two parts — far fewer than most accounting qualifications.

Four hours each

Each part is 4 hours: 100 multiple-choice questions (3 hours, 75% of the score) plus an application section (1 hour, 25% of the score).

Case-Based Questions from 2026

From the September/October 2026 window, the application section moves from two essay questions to two Case-Based Questions (CBQs) — structured tasks built around a short business scenario. The content tested and the 25% weighting stay the same.

Multiple-choice gate

You must score at least 50% on the multiple-choice section to unlock the application section — falling short ends the exam there.

Either order

You can sit [CMA (USA) Part 1](/courses/cma1clp) and [CMA (USA) Part 2](/courses/cma2clp) in whichever order suits you. See [exam process, windows & results](/about-cma/exam-process-windows-and-results).

How it's built

Exam format

Multiple-choice section

100 questions per part, 3 hours, scored automatically. You must score at least 50% correct to proceed to the application section.

Application section (CBQs from Sep/Oct 2026)

2 Case-Based Questions per part, 1 hour total — each built around a short (roughly 250-word) business scenario followed by several structured tasks: drag-and-drop, fill-in-the-blank, select-from-a-list, multi-select, and calculations.

Same 25% weight

The application section carries the same 25% weight the essay format did, with partial credit available and no penalty for wrong answers.

Essays still apply in some regions

Candidates testing in China, Japan and Taiwan continue with the essay format for now.

Scoring

Each part is scored on a scale of 0–500; you need 360 to pass. You can take Part 1 and Part 2 in either order. See [exam process, windows & results](/about-cma/exam-process-windows-and-results).
