ACCA Entry Requirements and Exemptions

Find out who can register for the ACCA Qualification, what academic qualifications you need, and how previous study may reduce the number of exams you need to take.

Who Can Register?

ACCA Entry Requirements

The standard minimum entry requirement for the ACCA Qualification is two A-Levels and three GCSEs, or equivalent qualifications, in five separate subjects, including English and Mathematics. ACCA assesses equivalent qualifications according to its country-specific entry requirements.

Standard Entry Route

If you meet ACCA's minimum entry requirements, you can apply to register for the full ACCA Qualification. Check the official requirements for the country where your qualifications were awarded before applying.

Is There an Age Limit?

There is no upper age limit for starting your ACCA journey. School leavers, graduates, and working professionals can all explore the route that best fits their qualifications and experience.

Can You Start ACCA Without a Degree?

Yes. A degree is not compulsory if you meet the standard minimum entry requirements. If you do not meet them, you may be able to begin with ACCA Foundation-level qualifications and progress to the full ACCA Qualification after completing the required route.

The Foundation Route to ACCA

Foundations in Accountancy (FIA) provides a route for students who do not meet the standard entry requirements. Eligible students who complete the current Diploma in Accounting and Business route can progress to the ACCA Qualification with exemptions from the three Applied Knowledge exams, subject to ACCA's rules.

ACCA Exemptions Explained

ACCA exemptions allow eligible students to skip exams where previous academic or professional qualifications cover the required knowledge and skills. The exemptions awarded depend on the qualification held and how closely its syllabus matches ACCA's requirements.

Which ACCA Papers Can Be Exempted?

Exemptions may be awarded for exams at two levels: Applied Knowledge: Business and Technology (BT), Management Accounting (MA), and Financial Accounting (FA). Applied Skills: Corporate and Business Law (LW), Performance Management (PM), Taxation (TX), Financial Reporting (FR), Audit and Assurance (AA), and Financial Management (FM).

Do Graduates Automatically Receive Exemptions?

No. Having a degree or professional qualification does not guarantee a specific number of exemptions. ACCA assesses the qualification, institution, syllabus and applicable exemption arrangements. A relevant accounting degree may qualify for more exemptions than a broader business qualification, but the outcome must be checked individually.

Maximum of Nine Exemptions

You can receive exemptions from up to nine exams across Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills. The maximum covers all three Applied Knowledge papers and all six Applied Skills papers.

No Exemptions at Strategic Professional

ACCA does not award exemptions from Strategic Professional exams. All students must complete the required Strategic Professional exams, including Strategic Business Leader (SBL), Strategic Business Reporting (SBR), and two Options papers under the current qualification.

Are ACCA Exemptions Free?

ACCA charges an exemption fee for each exemption awarded at Applied Knowledge or Applied Skills. The amount depends on the applicable fee schedule and location. You can also choose to sit an exam instead of accepting an exemption, if permitted under ACCA's rules.
